When Should We Start To Present Children’s Books To Our Kids?
Many new mums start to purchase children’s books, being pregnant. You should begin to read to your little girl or boy practically since his or her birth. Of course, don’t buy extremely thick encyclopedia, even if it is for kids. It is too early for such reading. And don’t try to read collected fairy tales, short nursery rhymes will be the best. They play an important role in emotional and speech development of a child.
Firstly, thanks to simple and melodious phrases with often repeating sounds, a baby learns to recognize voices and to respond to their prosodic coloring, then begins to repeat pleasing sounds. By the way, it is very good to learn by heart some thematic rhymes, for example, some rhymes about washing, sleeping or eating and read them before respective acts.
Similar rhymes help to develop content-addressable memory. A baby will know what you will do after these words, and as a result, will start to understand their meaning faster and easier.
For a six-month-old baby buy books with thick cardboard pages and beautiful pictures. They are handy and you can give them into child’s hands without fear that book will be “eaten up”. And also your child starts to understand book’s function and develops motor function of fingers, learning to turn over pages without help.
Buying such editions, it is necessary to be guided by some obligatory rules. First of all it should be a book of good quality, of course: it should not have a fetid smell of paint or have exfoliating pages. It should be with a strong back and without unfolding three-dimensional details, which can be easily torn out and pushed into mouth. In general, one and two-year-old babies think that book is a toy, and that’s why the main feature of it should be its colorful look and singularity. Don’t be in a hurry to buy books, where there is “action” on every page. Probably, it is interesting for you, when picture gives maximum of information, but this is too hard for children’s perception. This concerns also the text under a picture. If this is a fairy tale, 1-2 lines on a page will be enough. If there are some nursery rhymes, it is better to buy books, on every page of which there is only one quatrain.
By the way, children’s psychologists say that you should check book’s contents before starting to read it to your kid. Don’t be slothful, thumb it through in the shop, you should be sure that a book is not about bad guys, fights, tears and other negative moments – both in the text, and on pictures. They are not the best instructive episodes for kids.
