Books And Movies
Have you ever noticed that probably ninety percent of movies that are produced today in Hollywood were derived from a story found in novels or kids books? It should also be noted that nobody ever wrote a book based on a movie. Producers and actors in Hollywood are considered by many people to be those on the forefront in the world of creativity and artful storytelling; they award themselves with dozens of ceremonies and trophies every year, they are idealized by millions upon millions of people and they are paid far more than any other storyteller or artist, yet much of their work is taken from the real storyteller, the author.
Authors receive far less acclaim for their work, yet much of our modern culture can be attributed to authors and the insights into humanity and society they provide to the world. The task of sitting down and writing a novel is one of the most trying, intense, creative and difficult challenges in the world, and a great novel surely marks the author as a true genius. The greatest minds in history are authors and their ideas have helped shape societies around the world since the beginning of recorded history; from the great philosophers like Aristotle, Socrates and Plato who gave us the ideas of democracy and free will that would later shape the United States to minds like Karl Marx whose ideas of communism and equality would later shape countries like the former Soviet Union and China.
It is certainly unfortunate that today the powers that shape our society come from Hollywood, television and movies instead of from literature. It seems as if the wisdom and intuition espoused by today’s greatest literary minds have been overwhelmed by the constant barrage of media and the predetermined stories from Hollywood that take no effort to enjoy and little effort to produce.
