Humpback Whale Watching and Restaurants in Ricon de Guayabitos
I have been vacationing in Nayarit, Mexico for the last seven years, primarily because of the awesome surfing. I am no professional but I love to paddle out and grab a wave and the coastline along Banderas Bay is phenomenal. Several friends go to Mexico a few times a year for the great waves and beaches and, well, just because it is Mexico. During some trips, I witnessed tourists heading out for humpback whale watching in Sayulita, and while the tourists on the voyages always looked elated on their return trip, I do not get into wildlife much, nor do my buddies. We just surfed all day and then had a nice meal and drinks at a local cantina.

On one trip to Sayulita I went solo. My normal partners could not make it and it was something of a spontaneous trip for me at any rate. Stress at work lead to fits of frustration and I usually answer those with a fast jaunt to Mexico. I had executed my traditional routine of surfing, eating and drinking for two days and frankly, I was not having a great deal of fun without my companions. On the third night I was on vacation, I got myself a little lubricated and struck up a conversation with a group of travelers who were planning to head into Sayulita for a humpback whale watching cruise. Perhaps it was the booze, but I was unexpectedly rather interested in getting close to these majestic mammals. My new friends made it sound like wonderful experience, and I was beginning to realize that through my love of surfing and the ocean, I had developed an empathy for the animals in it.

I had a blazing hangover the next day and I was sick but my new friends insisted on dragging me off to Sayulita for the humpback whale watching voyage. Crowds bother me – one of the reasons I had stayed off the tours is that sometimes there are lots of people on the boats. Mercifully, this was a private voyage and there were only a dozen of us. Nothing happened for about a half hour and then only a couple hundred feet away a massive humpback whale blasted out of the water, rose high above the surface, blasted a shot of water to take a breath and crashed back into the sea. I saw schooling fish
and even a group of sperm whales. It was probably the most surreal experience I have had and now every trip I make to Mexico always includes a whale watching tour.
